Fingal County Council lodge plans for 'iconic' new greenway linking Malahide and Donabate

Plans have been lodged for an "iconic" greenway that will link Malahide and Donabate.

Fingal County Council has lodged the application with An Bord Pleanala for the Broadmeadow Way, a proposed new 6km walking and cycling greenway route that will run between Malahide Demesne and Newbridge Demesne in Donabate.

The proposed development will run across the Malahide Estuary adjacent to the mainline railway viaduct.

If permission is granted, it is expected the greenway will eventually connect with the proposed Fingal Coastal Way, a 32km high quality, recreational stretch of greenway connecting Donabate, Rush, Skerries, Ardgillan Castle, Balbriggan and Bremore Castle.

Mayor of Fingal Anthony Lavin said he was delighted to see the project progressing to the planning stage.

He said: “This piece of greenway infrastructure will provide considerable benefits not just for tourists visiting the area but also immeasurable quality of life benefits for residents.”

Interim Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Ann Marie Farrelly added: “We have an exciting programme of greenway infrastructure under development in Fingal at present and we plan to continue to develop a network of high quality greenways over the coming years, as part of our wider sustainable transport infrastructure programme, in order to realise the many benefits that this type of development can bring in terms of climate change, economic development, and health and leisure amenity.”

Senior Engineer Paul Carroll said the greenway would showcase the "stunning natural scenery" of the north County Dublin coastline.

He added: “Considerable work has gone into bringing the scheme to this stage and a Nature Impact Statement, Environmental Impact Assessment Report and Compulsory Purchase Order will form part of the application.

"We hope that anyone with an interest in the scheme will take the opportunity to provide their views on the proposal, and full details are available on the Fingal County Council public consultation online portal.”
