By Roisin Cullen

Fingal County Council has announced that free parking will be available in five towns in the run up to Christmas.

Parking will be free for three Saturdays in the run up to Christmas.

This initiative follows on from previous schemes and it's hoped that it will encourage people to shop local.

Balbriggan, Rush, Skerries, Swords and Malahide will all have free parking on the 4th, 11th,18th December.

A County Council spokeswoman said: "Fingal County Council supports local enterprise and hopes that this initiative will assist local businesses by encouraging citizens to “shop local” in these towns at the busiest shopping time of the year.

"Parking must be legal, i.e. no parking in loading bays or blue permit parking spaces without a valid permit. It should be noted that Pay and Display areas in Clonsilla, Dublin 15, has free parking on Saturdays all year round."
