Fines increased for fly-tipping and littering as cases soar in lockdown

Trafford council has hiked fly-tipping and littering fines following soaring cases during lockdown.

The town hall has raised its on-the-spot fixed penalty notices for fly-tipping from £200 to £400. Littering pentalties have gone up from £100 to £150.

A council spokesperson said: “Litterers and fly-tippers have also been warned that the council’s environmental improvement team is determined to catch those breaking the law and is working closely with colleagues in the council’s CCTV control room to identify offenders.”

Officers will issue on-the-spot fines to people caught dropping litter, including cigarette butts and chewing gum.

The council said a key focus will also be to target fly-tippers who ‘persistently choose to blight the environment of local neighbourhoods’ – who will be fined £400 or prosecuted.

A spokesperson for Trafford council added: “Trafford council believes it is wrong to throw litter on the floor and if we catch you, we will come down hard on you.

If you witness anyone fly-tipping, the council has said you can now report them to the authority’s fly tipping hotline on 0161 912 4152.
