Fine Gael in freefall as latest poll shows Sinn Fein are now top of the pile

Fine Gael are in freefall as Sinn Féin have soared to the top of the polls.

The latest opinion poll from MRBI for the Irish Times will have shocked Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar.

Sinn Féin are on 25%, Fianna Fáil 23% and Fine Gael are on just 20%.

This is the third poll in a row that has seen Sinn Féin ahead of Fine Gael.

But it is the first time ever that Sinn Féin have led an opinion poll on its own.

The poll was conducted on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week among 1,200 respondents in 120 locations across the country.

The Greens are on 8%, Labour are on 4% and the combined smaller parties hold a 20% share.

This is the third poll in a row that has Sinn Féin ahead of Fine Gael - and this one shows them leading by the largest margin, 5%.

The Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post put Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil joint top at 24% each, while Sinn Féin were second ahead of Fine Gael in a Times Ireland Edition poll on Saturday.

The stunning rise of Sinn Féin and plummeting of Sinn Féin support has set up the RTE Prime Time debate as a political deathmatch.
