Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party to release vote results on Programme for Government today

Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Green Party are all expected to release the results on their respective votes for the Programme for Government today.

Should all parties approve the deal, a sitting of the Dail will take place in the Convention Centre on Saturday.

But if it fails to pass, the country will be thrown into further political uncertainty more than four months since the general election, with a second election looming.

Uncertainty as to whether or not the Greens will endorse the deal has cast major doubts that an agreement could be reached.

The party requires a two-thirds majority to approve the deal with just over 2,000 members eligible to vote.

But Fine Gael leader and possible future Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has signalled that he is confident the programme will receive backing from all parties.

And the caretaker Taoiseach believes it will pass with higher numbers than expected.

Fine Gael has just over 700 votes to count given the way its electoral college is structured.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fail's number of eligible voting members is just shy of 15,000.

If agreed, Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin will be voted in as Taoiseach at the sitting of the Dail on Saturday.

The meeting is set to take place in the Convention Centre as the venue can accommodate all members of the Dail while allowing them to practice social distancing.

In the scenario of the deal passing, Mr Martin will remain Taoiseach until December 2022 before Leo Varadkar resumes the role once again.

Mr Varadkar addressed the nation on Thursday evening in what was likely his last public speech as Taoiseach as he announced Phase 3 of reopening the country would go ahead on Monday June 29.

Results for each party are expected at some stage this evening.
