Fine Gael election candidate 'offered her womb' to close friends to become a surrogate mum

A Fine Gael candidate has “offered her womb” to her close friends to become a surrogate mum, she revealed yesterday.

Becky Loftus Dore who wants to represent Westmeath-Kinnegad decided to do it after speaking with the couple who couldn’t have children.

The 42-year-old from Killucan – who already has four kids of her own – was implanted with an embryo from the pair and is now 35 weeks pregnant.

She told Midlands 103 yesterday: “It wasn’t something I would have gone out and looked for – it wasn’t on my bucket list of things I would have liked to do with my life.

“What changed my mind was we were visiting some very good friends of ours and we were aware they couldn’t have children.

Devastated mum regrets daughter's name - as people keep saying it's 'boring'

“We were speaking about our IVF and how difficult it is and how it’s still not spoken about a huge amount.

“And then I thought, ‘Well, I’m not over the hill, the big hill, and literally I offered my womb.”

Everyone decided to go ahead with Ms Loftus Dore’s suggestion and a clinic in Cyprus was chosen.

The busy mum has decided to run for office after being involved in her community for a number of years and is currently leading a Junior Tidytowns project.

Many people asked her whether she would be upset to give the baby away – but she views the little boy more as a nephew than her own son.

Ms Loftus Dore said: “Other surrogates said it’s such a different journey and they’re so right.

Dad-to-be digs himself massive hole at ultrasound scan with insensitive comment

“The whole pregnancy has been a very different journey for every individual because I’m not in my nesting mode, we’re not doing up the room.

“The couple’s excitement is heightened because they’re painting the room and doing all the book reading.

“We are very good friends and this child will remain in our life but it will be very much more of a nephew kind of scenario rather than any other type of connection.”
