Fine for yob who drove at cops and assaulted officer during domestic

Police officers jumped to safety as a Blantyre man drove his car towards them during a domestic disturbance.

Bryce Hopkins had been demanding that his former partner return gifts he'd given her.

Hopkins, 47, of Wheatland Avenue, was fined £760 at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted culpably or recklessly driving towards police officers and colliding with two vehicles, including a police car.

Hopkins also admitted punching Sergeant Cameron Morton and threatening or abusive behaviour towards his daughter Carys Hopkins and ex-partner Margaret Lappin at their home in Broompark Road, Blantyre.

Paula Wedlock, prosecuting, said Hopkins made repeated attempts to contact the women on January 23 and into the early hours of the following morning.

The fiscal stated: "In one call to his daughter he was ranting about his ex-partner, saying he wanted gifts he bought returned."

Hopkins went to their home at 6am and woke the women by banging on the door. Their CCTV showed him using his shoulder to try to force the door open.

Police officers arrived and told him to get out of the car he was in.

Ms Wedlock stated: "The accused then drove forward slowly in a reckless manner, moving towards the officers who had to take action to prevent the vehicle making contact and injuring them.

"He collided with a parked vehicle and moved forward again, hitting the police car.

"More officers attended and the accused shunted his vehicle towards Sergeant Morton, causing him to place his hands on the bonnet.

"During a struggle the accused punched the officer twice, causing injury to his face. He was then arrested."

Sheriff Thomas Millar accepted Hopkins's vehicle had been moving slowly during the incident.

Hopkins was ordered to be of good behaviour and to return to court in December.

The sheriff will decide then whether or not to impose a non-harassment order.
