Canberra motorists will get slapped with larger fines for driving in a bus lane from today.
Drivers will now be fined $484 for illegally using a bus lane, as police increase their presence in enforcing the offence.
The fine increase comes as more than 100 drivers were caught in just 30 minutes by police during an operation on Thursday.
ACT police carried out the operation on city-bound lanes on Barry Drive on Thursday morning, and many drivers were caught using the lane before broken white lines near the Dryandra Street turn off.
Office in charge of traffic operations, Detective acting station sergeant Marcus Boorman, said while all drivers caught in the operation had been handed a warning, the offence would be targeted more frequently.
"It's important for drivers to understand the rules and responsibilities around bus lanes," Detective Acting Station Sergeant Boorman said.
"The majority of drivers [caught] said they entered the bus lane early as they were turning into Dryandra Street, but that is simply not a good reason for disobeying the road rules.
"Police will be targeting this offence in the coming weeks and months."
