Terrorism charges have been laid against an Adelaide suburbs man after a joint investigation into "ideologically motivated violent extremism".

SA Police (SAPOL) said the 24-year-old Findon man had today been charged with 10 counts of possessing information for terrorist acts and 11 counts of possessing instructions to make an explosive device.

He had previously been charged by SAPOL for the alleged illegal manufacture and possession of firearms.

He now faces 31 charges in total.

SAPOL's Counter Terrorism and Security Section laid the new charges against the man today after investigating him with the help of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation.

In a statement, police said there was "no threat to community safety identified during the investigation".

However, AFP Assistant Commissioner Counter Terrorism Scott Lee said the alleged offences pose a "significant threat", which the AFP took "very seriously".

"The AFP works closely with its state and territory partners through the Joint Counter Terrorism Teams to combine resources, share intelligence and act quickly when the safety of the community is at risk."

SAPOL Assistant Commissioner Noel Bamford praised the investigation and said the South Australia Joint Counter Terrorism Team continued to monitor and take "definitive action against individuals or groups who promote this type of violence".

"The actions taken in this matter clearly demonstrate the ongoing coordinated and cooperative approach by all agencies involved in the joint approach to investigating these types of criminal activities," he said.

The man appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody to next appear on March 16, 2022.

Police said the maximum penalty for the charges is seven years' imprisonment.
