Find out latest UK local lockdown rules as Boris Johnson vows a more ‘united approach’ to tackling Covid-19

Boris Johnson has spoken with Nicola Sturgeon to discuss ways of curbing the alarming rise in Covid-19 cases.

The UK Prime Minister had reaffirmed his commitment to taking a ‘united approach, as much as possible’ in tackling the killer virus.

Johnson is set to chair a Cobra meeting on Tuesday with the heads of government in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to determine what further restrictions are needed.

Dozens of areas across the UK have been put into local lockdown with seven in Scotland including Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire.

More restrictions are also in the pipeline and the First Minister is set to announce changes to the country's lockdown during a statement in parliament on Tuesday afternoon while Johnson will address the people of England later in the evening to announce new measures, likely to include curfews of pubs and restaurant opening hours.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Downing Street said: “Earlier today, the Prime Minister had calls with the first ministers of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and the Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland about how coronavirus is spreading across the country.

"During these calls, the Prime Minister made clear that the rising infection rates are a cause for great concern, which he is taking very seriously.

"He reiterated his unwavering commitment to working with the devolved administrations as we continue to tackle the virus.

“They all agreed to act with a united approach, as much as possible, in the days and weeks ahead."

The devolved leaders will take part in an emergency Cobra meeting chaired by Mr Johnson on Tuesday.

It follows the UK’s four chief medical officers recommending that the UK Covid-19 alert level be raised for the first time since June.

They all believe it should now be increased to Level 4 as the risk of transmission is now “high or rising exponentially”.

It follows a grim warning from leading scientists who believe the UK could see 50,000 new infections a day if no action is taken.
