Find Lafiqul Islam's murder mastermind: ABMSU

GUWAHATI: The All Bodoland Territorial Council Minority Students' Union (ABMSU) on Wednesday demanded that the state government find and arrest the mastermind in the murder of the union’s former president and an influential student leader, Lafiqul Islam, in 2017.

“The CBI released names and photos of three accused in the case on Monday four years after the incident. Though it took a long time, it is still good progress in the case. But we want the government to arrest the mastermind behind Lafiqul’s murder. The accused are just hired killers. We suspect there’s a big name involved,” ABMSU general secretary Taison Hussain said.

Lafiqul was shot dead by unidentified men around 4.30pm on August 1 at Titaguri market in Kokrajhar district. Police said two motorcycle-borne men used an AK-47 to shoot Ahmed, who died on the spot. He was supposed to lead a protest march on August 2 against the alleged harassment meted out to Muslim residents thought to be D-voters. Over 10,000 people were supposed to be part of the protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office in adjoining Chirang district.

Hussain told TOI that the ABMSU leadership called on the additional superintendent of police (headquarters), Kokrajhar district, Surjeet Singh Panesar, on Tuesday and demanded the arrest of the accused at the earliest so that justice can be delivered.

“Since CBI does not let anyone to meet any of the sleuths, we called on the additional SP today (Tuesday). He assured us that the police department will assist the CBI in arresting the accused,” Hussain said.
