Financial watchdog creating 45 new roles as part of Midlands expansion

The Financial Ombudsman Service  is expanding its Midlands operation by creating 45 new roles.

The financial watchdog is looking to fill the skilled roles at its growing base in Coventry.

The service is expanding its Coventry operation two years after it set up a base in the city and is looking to recruit 45 full and part-time employees.

Successful candidates will be part of a team that helps consumers resolve their financial complaints.

The new roles will comprise of up to 40 investigators who look at complaints when they first come in, and five ombudsmen who have the final say in settling consumers’ complaints.

The roles are based at the Financial Ombudsman Service’s office in One Friargate, next to Coventry railway station.

The ombudsman service can look at complaints about a variety of financial woes – from concert tickets that went missing in the post to damage to properties caused by storms.

Since April 1 the Coventry team has resolved more than 30,000 PPI complaints.

Now the service has started an additional recruitment process for its new Claim Management Company (CMC) division which launched last April.

Since then, the CMC division has handled around 400 complaints.

Geoffrey Futer, ombudsman leader at the Financial Ombudsman Service, said: “We’re looking for highly motivated people from the widest possible range of backgrounds to investigate complaints about financial products and services.

“They’ll spend six months in our academy developing the skills to find the answers that are fair and feel fair.

“We want candidates to be passionate about making a difference and committed to solve consumers’ problems.”

The Coventry office expects to have around 100 staff employed on a permanent basis by the end of this year.

The Financial Ombudsman Service was set up by Parliament to resolve individual complaints between financial businesses and their customers fairly, reasonably, quickly and as informally as possible.

It can look into problems involving most types of money matters from payday loans to pensions and pet insurance to PPI.

It has a major office in London, but set up an office in Coventry in 2017 as it wanted an additional office with good transport connections, less than 100 minutes from the capital.

One Friargate is also home to around 1,500 Coventry City Council staff.

People interested in applying for one of the Financial Ombudsman’s Service’s new Coventry roles can do so here.

The cut off date for applications for ombudsman roles is October 27, while the cut-off date for investigator roles is November 3.
