The Financial Times Christmas appeal (or seasonal appeal in FT-speak) has raised the enormous sum of £2.7m.
The money goes to charity Room to Read, which builds libraries and schools and publishes local language children's books in Asia and Africa.
The FT raised the money with £790,000 from readers, £990,000 from a gala wine tasting hosted by wine writer Jancis Robinson, while an online auction by private members' club Quintessentially raised £55,000.
But the appeal was so successful because contributors matched the reader contributions. Thus Barclays Capital donated £500,000, an anonymous Californian family foundation £250,000, Credit Suisse £63,000 and software company Atlassian £62,000.
