Finance expert takes critical Celtic fans to task in sarcastic response to Rangers finances assessment

A football finance expert has taken a pop at Celtic fans after his comments on the state of Rangers finances.

Kieran Maguire hosts the succesful Price of Football podcast and this week appeared on a BBC podcast to talk about the gap between Glasgow's biggest clubs ahead of their Scottish Premiership meeting at Parkhead on Saturday lunchtime. During the conversation, Maguire spoke in good terms about Rangers and said they are near to a point where the club is sustainable on a long-term basis without having to look towards potential investors willing to put hands into the pockets.

But this didn't sit well with some of the Hoops faithful, who have taken to social media to criticise his comments. But the finance expert had a reply of his own, tweeting: "Have just asked ChatGPT “Where are football finance specialists based in the UK. The answer was Sheffield Hallam University 2, University of Liverpool 2, Portsmouth University 1, East end of Glasgow, 60,000”

Maguire said about Rangers: "What we've seen at Rangers is the club moving from a recovery phase following what happened many years towards trying to get to a position where it is sustainable on a long term basis. And therefore it doesn't have to be asking either external funders or investors, directors, where they have to put money into the club.

"And they are now pretty close to that in respect of the share issue we saw this week that was really in respect of capital projects, new Edmiston House and I know they are trying to improve disabled facilities. All this was discussed at the AGM.

"What we have seen is existing shareholders effectively have put in money broadly in proportion to their existing investments to make sure their existing shareholders have not been substantially diluted."
