Finance expert says agents will be pushing Newcastle United to spending limit

Newcastle United have been warned that they will be pushed to the limit of their spending capability in the January transfer window.

The window opened on January 1 in England, and while some Newcastle fans had hoped new arrivals might be ready to sign immediately, no players have joined the club in the first few days, although the deal to land Atletico Madrid's Kieran Trippier appears to be close.

One expert, Dr Daniel Plumley, a sport finance lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, said negotiations will be tricky because agents know Newcastle’s owners have a lot of money, but those owners need to stick to spending limits.

He told Football Insider : “They have got to have a limit. People are looking at them knowing how much cash sits behind that ownership structure. You’d think that limit would be pushed.

“Agents want to move their players. If Newcastle is on the agenda, you can see premiums being talked about because they know the owners are good for it.

“But that has all got to fit in with what the club want to do strategically and what they are willing to spend under FFP [Financial Fair Play].

“The league position is a big challenge because attracting players is difficult when you’re in a relegation battle.

“If you want to attract good players, they might come at a premium price because of where you are.

“They also need to get out of that situation because they need to keep the money coming in from the TV deal.”

The January transfer window closes on January 31.
