The incredible run of World Surf League tour rookie Morgan Cibilic at the Newcastle Cup has continued with a dramatic quarter-final win over fellow local Ryan Callinan.
The Merewether Beach pair couldn't be separated on the scoreboard in their last-eight heat on Saturday, finishing level on 10.37.
Callinan, needing a 4.88 score to take the lead, came agonisingly close with his last scoring wave but judges awarded it 4.87.
By virtue of having the highest-scoring single ride of the heat, a 5.70, Cibilic advanced to a semi-final clash with two-time world champion Gabriel Medina.
The Brazilian overcame compatriot Adriano De Souza in a tight heat but will be wary of 20-year-old Cibilic, who eliminated world No.1 John John Florence in a massive upset on Thursday.
The other semi-final will be an all-Brazilian affair with Italo Ferreira taking on Filipe Toledo.
Ferreira eliminated compatriot Deivid Silva, scoring an 8.50 on his best ride with a massive aerial move, while Toledo was too good for American Connor Coffin in the fourth quarter-final.
