'Finally common sense' - Newcastle United fans have their say on season ticket plans

Newcastle United fans have been reacting to the club's long-awaited announcement over season ticket plans.

With matches still being played behind closed doors, the Magpies have announced that fans keen on refunds for their season ticket will be paid some money in mid-December.

Fans who applied for credits for season tickets from 2019/20 can use them from this season onwards.

Those on long-term prize freeze deals will either be able to take their payments forward or claim a refund on matches missed.

The announcement has been a long time coming - and plenty of fans were relieved that the club are making progress on the saga.

Newcastle have confirmed that scheduled Direct Debit payments will still be taken from fans' accounts until February 2021 because they still anticipate supporters returning at some point this season.

All price freeze deals will be extended to include next season - even those coming to an end this season - and fans can roll their balance over until next season should they so wish.

Due to it being unknown how many matches will be missed this season, the Magpies are set to refund season-ticket holders in three parts.

Fans need to apply for refunds online by Friday, November 27, with the first batch being issued by mid-December.

The club have confirmed they will communicate details around the second stage of refunds in early 2021.

A statement by the club said: "The club suspended all one-year season ticket and single match ticket sales for the current season during the summer and provided refunds or account credits to all supporters who were forced to miss the final games of the 2019/20 campaign.

"However, supporters on long-term price freeze deals – which secure the lowest possible prices for seats over a nine or ten-year period – have continued to make scheduled payments for the 2020/21 campaign as the club awaits permission to enable them to return to St. James’ Park.

"Despite months of work to plan for a safe, socially distanced return of supporters, clubs across the country have not yet been given the go-ahead by authorities and an outline date for the return of spectators has yet to be confirmed by the government.

"In an online meeting with supporters and supporter groups to discuss a potential safe return to matches last month, the club made a broad commitment to refunding season ticket holders at designated stages throughout the season."
