Finally! A Manchester restaurant with PlayStation, Netflix and flesh-eating piranha fish

There's no shortage of elaborately decorated dining spaces in Manchester city centre.

From the vibrant scatter cushions and glowing green floor of The Ivy to the life-size cherry blossom tree in the middle of Tattu, it's not all about stripped-back industry in the restaurant scene.

Although lavish touches are plentiful, live animals are less so - until you make your way to Liverpool Road.

Here you'll find Appetite Junction, where an 8ft-wide tank is home to a school of flesh-eating piranhas, brought in all the way from Venezuela.

The restaurant, which specialises in grilled meat plates and outrageously large desserts, has also opted for a waterfall room and a bubble wall in its decor.

In a private VIP room off to one side, diners will find an entertainment station - including a PlayStation and Netflix - as well as a massage chair.

Rather than music, meals are soundtracked by the sounds of a rainforest, complete with frogs, birds and cascading water.

The 40-cover restaurant is fitted out with blue diner-style booths and its centre piece is a sectioned-off 'waterfall room', where the walls are turned into running water features.

Although it's a dry restaurant there are still creative drinks on offer (Manchester Evening News)

The waterfall room has four tables of two and is most popular with couples - but it's not for everyone.

Creator and founder Faz Bux says: "Sometimes people get a bit motion sick in there and ask to move! Most people love it though."

The sensory overload continues on to the food and drink, where dry ice mojitos, freak shakes and dessert stacks are all on the menu.

Dishes include burgers (priced between £10 and £12), and the restaurant's signature hot plate dinners, such as Korean grilled chicken, buffalo battered chicken, and falafel patty 'madness'.

Diners can also build their own pizzas, then finish up with a classic pudding (jam roly poly makes the cut) or a less-classic cookie dough skillet or chocolate brownie sizzler.

The restaurant is completely dry, but that doesn't stop Faz and his team from getting creative with the refreshments.

"You usually have to get an alcoholic drink to get the sensory appeal of dry ice," he says. "Somewhere like The Alchemist. But here you can have it without alcohol - we can even make a dry ice version of a hot Vimto. The hotter the drink, the better the effect!

"We are popular with families. We've got the sights, sounds, smells and tastes, it's very sensory - and kids love sensory."

The water tank which dominates one wall is hard to ignore, not least with the nine pairs of beady eyes staring back at you. The tank holds 1.2 tonnes of water and takes four hours to fill up.

Faz keeps the piranhas well-fed on a diet of chicken, fish, prawns and steak - and now trusts the freshwater fish enough to stick his hands in the water.

"They're a group and a pack, so there were a few power struggles to start with." At this, he points out one fish that only has one eye left. "They're all friends now though!"

The fishy friends have been enjoyed by famous faces too, with Manchester City player İlkay Gündoğan spotted dining in Appetite Junction recently.

"We want it to be a home away from home," says Faz, "Even if you want to just watch Netflix with your friends. You can literally Netflix and chill.

"Even our menu is set up like that - with our hot plates you can have mash, chips, veg, and whatever meat you want, covered in melted cheese. It's so much easier to find something you want to eat. You eat what you want and what you relate to.

"We'll treat you like family and it's different, but it's still a nice place."

Appetite Junction is located at 73-83 Liverpool Road, close to the Science and Industry Museum.

It is open seven days a week between 5pm and 11.30pm.
