Final preparations underway for Rutherglen's Landemer Day celebrations

Details of this year's Landemer Day have been finalised ahead of the event's return after a two-year absence.

The popular Rutherglen gala day will be held on Saturday, June 11, and organisers have revealed a variety of entertainment is on the cards.

The highlight of the day will, of course, be the crowning of the Landemer Queen, who this year is Nell Gray from Trinity High, with Abigail Perera and Lucy Lennon from the same school serving as her ladies in waiting.

Kacey Grant and Stacy Wood from Rutherglen High, Milly Hamilton from Cathkin High and Stonelaw High's Megan Welsh and Aleighya Allan will complete the Queen's court.

The crowning ceremony will begin at 11.30am, with Cambuslang Parish Church's Pipe Band and the Rutherglen and Cambuslang Rock n' Pop chorus serving as the Queen's entertainment.

The fun will continue into the afternoon with performances from the Fabulous Bronx Show Band and country singer Robyn Taylor, followed by Jim Cook's Jukebox Favourites to get the crowds dancing.

However, the Landemer Committee have admitted that this year's festivities will be tinged with sadness, as it will be taking place without Ian Duncan, the committee secretary who regularly served as the MC on the day.

He passed away earlier this year, and the committee paid tribute to Ian's tireless efforts, ahead of next weekend's event.

Jim Nixon, the Landemer committee chairman, said: "Ian was Mr Landemer. Where Landemer Day was concerned he was involved with every aspect of it. He would give his all to the task in hand, there was nothing done in half measures.

"He was front and centre too at the stage area on the day introducing the Queen, her Champion and her Court and making them feel at ease – from the first rehearsal Ian always told the girls: 'This is your day, relax and enjoy it and above all remember to smile, you have a lovely smile, so show it'!

"He would also say to the young ladies who, because they were nervous about walking to their seat on the stage, they almost ran, to 'slow down, you’re not in a race!' and they’d just give him a big smile.

"Ian was at the stage area the whole day, start to finish, helping the council guys who came to set up the stage and he was there too to help the same guys dismantle and clear up.

"He would then be getting ready for the Landemer Disco at night that he had helped set up for the Queen and her Court to have the most fantastic night with their new found Landemer friends.

"Everyone involved in Landemer Day will sorely miss Ian but he would wish everyone an enjoyable and dry day for Landemer Day 2022."

As well as the entertainment, there will be stalls and fairground attractions along the Main Street.

The early weather forecast suggests a cloudy and breezy day, but no rain.
