Final Premier League table simulated after Newcastle takeover - and it’s a new low for Tottenham

It is fair to say that Tottenham Hotspur have endured a few disappointing seasons since the hey-day of Mauricio Pochettino.

Spurs have finished outside of the Premier League top four in each of the last two campaigns, whilst they have also endured a frustrating start to the new season and currently sit eighth in the table during the second international break of the campaign.

That is not quite the story of the opening seven matches of the season though, with Nuno Espirito Santo carrying his new employers to the top of the table with a perfect start before three consecutive losses.

The north Londoners did however manage to get back on track last time out with a 2-1 victory against Aston Villa at home.

To the relief of Spurs fans, their fortunes are expected to improve throughout the campaign.

According to data shared by FiveThirtyEight, Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are expected to finish sixth in the Premier League this season, with the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United claiming the much sought-after top four places.

If the prediction comes through, it would mean another season away from the top table for Tottenham, but would however mean a return to the Europa League - dependent on the winners of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup - having been part of the inaugural Europa Conference League this term.

Despite that slight improvement - both on the European basis and position-wise - Spurs’ predicted points tally is a huge disappointment.

Backed to earn 56 points throughout the campaign, it is the club’s lowest Premier League points tally since the 2008/09 season where 51 points saw Spurs finish eighth under Juande Ramos and then Harry Redknapp.

One consolation though is that Spurs do manage to finish above north London rivals Arsenal for the sixth consecutive season.

Tottenham will certainly be hoping to improve upon their predicted fortunes this weekend as they aim to secure back-to-back wins with a trip to Newcastle United, who have since had their own £300m takeover confirmed.
