Final Premier League table predicted and it's great news for Chelsea

In case you hadn’t realised, top flight football - and all other professional football in England - is currently suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak.

One month ago, Liverpool were cruising towards a title, the top four remained in the balance, the relegation fight was heating up, and mid-table was mid-table.

Chelsea had just managed a 4-0 win over Everton after negotiating a tricky February schedule with a win against Tottenham and a loss against Manchester United.

Sitting in fourth place – three points clear of United - they looked a good bet for a Champions League place in Frank Lampard’s first season in charge.

John Terry's incredible football boot collection

But five weeks later, we now face the very real possibility that this season may not come to an end at all.

Premier League clubs joined forces on Wednesday to push for the football season to end by June 30, Chelsea among those pushing for an end date.

With nine games left to play, we could end up with crammed June football schedule.

With that in mind, how would Chelsea get on if they were to finish the season in such a rapid way?

Whilst we cannot know for sure at this stage, FiveThirtyEight have offered up their prediction on how the 2019/20 campaign will end.

The prediction model has Chelsea picking up just 16 more points between now and the end of the season to finish in fourth on 64 points, three points adrift of Leicester.

They’ll grab themselves a Champions League spot, two points ahead of Manchester United.

For the pessimists among you, according to FiveThirtyEight, the Blues have a 26% chance of finishing fifth – though this may be enough to seal a Champions League spot if Manchester City fail in their appeal to have their European ban overturned. For those with little faith, they have a 13 per cent chance of finishing 6th and missing out altogether.

A little more likely than that, they have a 17 per cent chance of finishing third, but a less than one per cent chance of snatching 2nd. But there’s no need to be greedy.
