After it’s second season being used in the Premier League, VAR continues to divide opinion amongst managers, player and supporters.
Even on the final weekend of the season, there were some frustrations with controversial penalties in Leicester City’s defeat to Tottenham and Manchester United ’s win over Wolves.
But a study has now shown which top-flight clubs got the rub of the green when it came to decisions being made via the use of technology.
The Sun have looked at how each game would have finished, had VAR not been in use during the 2020/21 campaign.
And it revealed that Arsenal, who finished outside of the European places for the first time since 1994/95 would have in fact finished in the top four.
A final day win over Brighton wasn’t enough for the Gunners, with Spurs coming from behind to beat Leicester.
But according to the report, Mikel Arteta’s side would have been four points better off without VAR, finishing above the likes of Chelsea, Leicester and Spurs.
Arteta launched a scathing rant directed towards the Stockley Park officials, after watching his side have a penalty overturned against Everton last month, following review.
"This has been building up. Enough is enough. Today I have had enough," said Arteta after that defeat.
"We've had many of them that nobody explains. It affects a lot of people, our job and most importantly our football club.
"What they [the match officials] do is behind the telephone. That's what I cannot understand.
"We were the better team but there are certain decisions that we can't control. To disallow a penalty 15 seconds before - [we had] eight or nine touches [after Nicolas Pepe was offside] - I saw it 10 times and I don't get it. It can be taken the way they want. Zero control. Somebody has to explain that.”
West Ham, who secured a place in the Europa League on the final day, would have been four points worse off without VAR, ensuring they would have narrowly missed out on continental competition.
At the top of the table, Manchester City ’s points tally was unaffected, while Liverpool would have leapfrogged Manchester United into second.
No side were as positively affected by the use of VAR than Everton, who drop five points and into the bottom half without it.
The bottom three remains the same, although West Brom would have swapped places with Fulham to finish 18th.
