A lighthouse in an Iwate Prefecture port, built to replace one washed away by a tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake, began operating last week, marking the completion of a project for replacing all of the prefecture's lost or damaged lighthouses.
According to the Kamaishi Coast Guard Office, the lighthouse in Kirikiri Port in the town of Otsuchi was one of 50 earmarked for renovation or rebuilding out of the 82 that stood before the disaster. The process has now been completed.
The original Kirikiri Port lighthouse was erected in 1964. Construction on the replacement began in October last year. The concrete structure, which stands 9 meters high, is powered by solar energy, and emits a night light beam that can be seen from 9 kilometers away.
"Safety has been enhanced for fishing boats and other vessels that use the port," said an official with the Kamaishi Coast Guard Office's transportation section.
