"Final Fantasy XIV" is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 after a long wait, especially as fans have been requesting for the title to be made available on the handheld platform.
While the requests to bring "Final Fantasy XIV" to the Nintendo Switch are now answered, the latest reveal has a catch that may be annoying for most players who enjoy it on other gaming platforms.
'Final Fantasy XIV' Officially Coming to Switch 2
Square Enix's "Final Fantasy XIV" Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim keynote showcase has confirmed the arrival of "Final Fantasy XIV" to the Nintendo Switch 2 platform. This was revealed by the game's producer and director, Naoki Yoshida.
The game will launch its beta client on the Switch 2 this August, and it will last for a month before Square Enix brings the public launch version of the game. During this beta phase, Square Enix will allow players to download and play the game on the Switch 2 for free.
The handheld demonstration during the Fan Festival 2026 showcase showed a stable frame rate. The game was able to run on the Switch 2 despite it being a development build, said GameRant.
What to Expect from Square Enix's Switch 2 Release?
According to Square Enix, the game will support cross-play and cross-progression across all available platforms, and players only need to use their existing account to continue on the Switch 2.
However, there is a catch, as Square Enix said it will require a separate subscription for the Switch 2 that is different from their existing one on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox.
That said, for those playing and subscribed to the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the "Final Fantasy XIV" subscription on the Switch 2 will be available 50 percent off its original price, starting at $7.49 before tax. However, those who are not subscribed to it will have to pay the full $14.99.
This goes on top of purchasing the actual game, which will require players to buy it from the Nintendo eShop in September after the beta phase ends. That said, Square Enix is no longer requiring players to have an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription to access the online features of "Final Fantasy XIV."
Alongside this, Square Enix also announced the latest expansion of the game, "Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold," that will launch by January 2027. The upcoming 7.5 patch, going live this April 28, will kickstart the expansion, said Square Enix.
