Final Fantasy 9 animation to be revealed this week

It’s a brave new world of remakes and retreads. Final Fantasy IX, as well as getting a fan-made non-playable… thing, is also getting an official animated series. As reported by Eurogamer and originally mentioned in Animation Magazine, Cyber Group Studios, the French studio who are handling the series, will debut it at Licensing Expo. That’s taking place in Las Vegas starting tomorrow and running through May 26.

Exactly what we’ll see is anyone’s guess – it could be a few frames, or a full-on trailer with a release date. We also have no idea what the show is actually about. It could be a full retelling of one of Final Fantasy’s better (and probably more-suited to a linear medium) stories, or a prequel, sequel, side-quel, or anything in between. For all we know it will tie into the end of FF7 Remake somehow and the internet will really be set on fire.

Cyber Group Studios is a very experienced company with dozens of projects under their belt, though none that I recognise. Not that I would expect to, given Cyber Group make exclusively children’s shows.

We’ve reached out to the studio to see if they can tell us more ahead of, or during, the expo.
