Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi may have beaten the upcoming RPG around 40 times already, but there's one scene that still manages to make him cry each time.
Following the long-awaited reveal of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy's third part, Hamaguchi has been doing the media rounds to keep up the excitement ahead of its launch next spring.
He's not been shy in flexing how many times he's been able to finish the RPG before we even knew what it's called, but now he's revealed that there's one scene that still brings him to tears each time he watches it. Naturally, he can't wait for everyone to see it.
"There's this scene that's quite essential to the story of Final Fantasy 7 where Cloud goes into a moment of introspection and discovers his identity, and how it fits with Zack and Aerith," he says to Omlette. "I think the way we portrayed that in Revelation turned out very well, and we're eager for fans to see it.
"I've finished Revelation about 40 times, and every time that introspective scene with Cloud made me cry."
Adding to this on Twitter, Hamaguchi says that it's a "key scene from the original" that's "related to Cloud's identity." He also calls it "one of the most memorable experiences in FF7 Revelation."
Thinking it over myself, I wonder if he's referring to a scene at Fort Condor where Tifa and Cloud fall into the Lifestream, leading to the former piecing together the latter's memories. It's a big moment for Cloud in remembering who he is, though, naturally, I'm sure Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will add some extra bits – Hamaguchi talking about Aerith and Zack implies as much.
But anyway, that's just a theory. We will, of course, have to wait until next Spring to find out. Thankfully, that's not too far away.
