Final Fantasy 14: Heavensward review - a gigantic update for an already enormous game

Translating the complexities of the PC massively multiplayer role playing game to the confines of a home console isn't easy, something that the once-troubled Final Fantasy 14 learned the hard way.

But, after the game-changing A Realm Reborn update, the expansion Heavensward sees Final Fantasy 14 now striding forward with great confidence.

Meticulously crafted to suit console gaming, Heavensward is a gigantic update for an already enormous game. Featuring nine new areas to explore – each at least one and a half times as big as those that have gone before them – and with three new jobs to try out, there’s enough here to add months of play to the MMO.

With a level cap of 60, an expanded crafting system and the ability to fly high above the new regions, it’s the new Dark Knight job that excites the most. Wielding huge swords, you can charge straight into even the most intimidating of battles, taking a beating and dealing out damage comfortably enough to suit solo players.

All the existing job types get new abilities to try out, although some of the additions could do with a little fine tuning for the sake of class balancing.

It’s worth remembering too that almost everything on offer here is initially restricted to those who have worked their way through a large chunk of A Realm Reborn’s content.

Heavensward is very story driven – as all good Final Fantasy games should be – and it picks up directly where Reborn left off. So keep that in mind before parting with your cash.

Heavensward will also get newcomers excited, so here’s hoping the hardcore fanbase don’t blitz ahead before newbies get a chance to catch up.

Price: £19-£30
