Final cost of National Children's Hospital to exceed €2 billion according to Labour TD Alan Kelly

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar admitted in the Dail on Tuesday that the contractor for the National Children's Hospital had submitted claims for more money.

Varadkar told fellow politicians that the new claims for the controversial project had "yet to be adjudicated on".

The hospital, being constructed on a 12-acre site at the St James's Hospital campus in Dublin, has been marred in controversy over spiralling costs for a number of months.

Labour TD and Health Spokesman Alan Kelly said the new submission would see the final cost of the Hospital exceed the staggering €2 billion mark.

However, the Taoiseach said there would be no increase in the building's budget allocation.

He told the Dail: "There has been no change to the budget allocated [for the Hospital] in December 2018.

"The contracter has, however, submitted claims and these have to be adjudicated.

"It's not unusual in a major construction project for a contractor to submit claims if they believe they have had to carry out works that was beyond the contract."

In 2014 the total cost was announced as €650million, rising to €1billion in 2017 before it soared to €1.433billion before Christmas.

Then it got even worse when it was revealed at the Public Accounts Committee in February that it would be a bill worth €1.7billion.
