Final call for a rare chance to get up and close to the Flying Scotsman in Shildon

Visitors to Shildon's Locomotion museum have a chance to get inside the world famous Flying Scotsman's cab this weekend.

The Flying Scotsman is one of the world's best-loved locomotives. In its heyday, the train used to hurtle down the East Coast Mainline, calling at Newcastle on its way from Edinburgh to London.

The steam train was the first to reach a speed of 100mph, which cemented its iconic status.

The Flying Scotsman has been on display at Locomotion since July 26. Visitors have been able to take rides on the train and view it up close.

Locomotion has confirmed visitors will be able to get access to the cab on Saturday August 10 - booking ahead is advisable.

The train will still be there on Sunday August 11, when it will be viewable from the museum's sidings.

The Flying Scotsman was the first steam-powered locomotive to reach 100mph. It was withdrawn from service in 1962. A 10-year restoration project cost £4.2m and it returned to the tracks in 2015.

Call Locomotion on 01904 685780 to book a spot to view the Flying Scotsman's cab and foot plate.
