Filton NHS facility confirms coronavirus cases

A number of coronavirus cases have been confirmed at an NHS facility in Bristol.

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) has said there have been "some cases" of Covid-19 linked to their non-public-facing Filton site.

However, NHSBT would not release the exact number of confirmed cases or say how many staff members are isolating as a result of this.

An NHSBT spokesperson: “Staff safety is paramount. All our sites are COVID-secure and we follow Pubic Health England guidelines on COVID-19, and when necessary conduct our own contact tracing.

“There have recently been some cases of COVID-19 linked to our non-public-facing Filton site and in response we have carried out appropriate and timely contact tracing as well as working with PHE and NHS Test & Trace to offer staff testing as part of the current surge programme in the South Gloucestershire area – this is a precautionary step to ensure that staff safety and the national blood supply are not put at risk.

“We will continue to work closely with PHE and other agencies in response to the pandemic.”

An email sent to staff and seen by Bristol Live said there had been "a small number of cases" of coronavirus linked to the site.

The email added contact tracing had been carried out and all affected staff had been advised on any measures they need to take.

It continued: "Last week Public Health England contacted us and asked for support with their enhanced surveillance work, following the confirmed cases of the P1 Variant of Concern (also referred to as the Brazil variant).

"As a result, we re-investigated recent Covid-19 cases in Filton. We haven't identified any new or different contacts that we need to speak with."

Th email said additional testing done last week would identify if there were any further cases of Covid-19, but that the likelihood was "incredibly low".

Mike Wade, deputy regional director for PHE South West said: "As new information has emerged from our enhanced surveillance work following the confirmed cases of the P1 Variant of Concern, contacts outside the household have been identified and are being notified and offered testing.”
