Filmmaker Amandine Gay and the politics of international adoption

ENCORE! © FRANCE 24

"Une histoire à soi" or "A Story of One's Own" is a film that centres around the lives of five French adoptees who were born in Brazil, Rwanda, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Switzerland. Beyond personal takes, filmmaker Amandine Gay opts for a political approach to international adoption, bringing up complex topics such as race and global inequality. The black and pansexual feminist and adoptee spoke to FRANCE 24 about her documentary, highlighting the importance of allyship for white families adopting non-white children.

We also discuss her first film "Speak Up", which inspired actress Aïssa Maïga to launch a manifesto lamenting the lack of representation in cinema.
