Filming resumes on long-awaited Twin Town sequel

It's been delayed by both flooding and a global pandemic, but the long-awaited sequel to the hit Swansea film Twin Town looks to be back on track.

Steel tracks, to be precise, with director Kevin Allen asking if anyone local has a WWII tank he can borrow for one of the scenes in the movie.

Mooted ever since the original caused an international stir in 1997, the production's progress has been hampered by a string of mishaps over the years - not least the news in 2017 that local beavers had waterlogged the set by blocking up a nearby stream with their dam.

But, while Wales' river-dwelling creatures were later exonerated of any blame - teenagers were eventually named as the culprits - lockdown due to the spread of Covid-19 recently saw filming shut down yet again.

However, it now seems the return of the notorious Lewis twins - played once again by real life brothers Rhys Ifans and Llyr Evans - is getting ever closer to becoming reality.

Director Kevin Allen has certainly been very active on Facebook recently, calling for all manner of production staff who might be able to lend their services - as well as putting out feelers for the loan of an army tank - "Preferably WWII , but anything considered."

And, while the mental image of the joyriding Lewises marauding across the Gower in a heavy duty armoured vehicle is an interesting one, the AC Cobra kit car in which they once tore up Bryn Cartwright's favourite rugby pitch might also be making a reappearance.

"Swansea folks ... trying to remember who supplied the AC Cobra for the Twin Town Anniversary screening a couple of years ago ... if I can't track them down, who's got a black or dark blue AC Cobra?" Kevin also requested last month.

Named Tin Town - after the historical association with the tinplate industry held by Llanelli, where the film is set - it's been described as more a 'companion piece' to the original than an official sequel and looks to focus on its antihero siblings' move into the world of cannabis farming.

And Kevin's brother, actor Keith Allen, will also be making a comeback.

The 66-year-old famously had a cameo in the '97 film as a farmer who inadvertently eats a hotdog laced with magic mushrooms and ends up completely out of it and cavorting naked with a sheep.

"I can't talk much about it , but what I will say is I've read the script and it's very good, really funny," Keith told WalesOnline back in 2017.

Dougray Scott, Di Botcher and the late Huw Ceredig and much missed Brian Hibbard also had memorable parts in the original movie.
