Filming for TV series Belgravia from maker of Downton Abbey takes place in Edinburgh

Parts of Edinburgh resembled scenes from the 19th century as filming for a new period drama began at the weekend.

Belgravia, from Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes, is filming in the capital during July.

It stars Philip Glenister, Tamsin Greig, Alice Eve, Harriet Walker and Tom Wilkinson.

At the weekend, cast members in period costume were seen at the city chambers on the Royal Mile, and horse-drawn carriages were spotted in the city centre.

Greig - who starred in sitcoms Episodes, Green Wing and Black Books - was also spotted in costume in Moray Place on Monday.

Belgravia, based on Fellowes' novel of the same name, is a story of secrets and dishonour in 19th century London.

It centres on events set in motion on the evening of the Battle of Waterloo at a society ball hosted by the Duchess of Richmond, involving the Trenchard family, whose lives change forever.

The New Town will be used as a stand-in for London's famous postcode, with filming also expected in Parliament Square and Moray Place.

Rosie Ellison, head of the capital's film office Film Edinburgh, said: "When the production team visited Edinburgh to scout locations, they immediately realised the architecture of the New Town is ideal for period dramas and fit the brief perfectly.

"The film-friendly response the filmmakers have received from the local community and city council couldn’t be warmer. We look forward to welcoming the crew to the city."

Producer Colin Wratten, whose recent credits include Killing Eve said: "Edinburgh is an extremely film-friendly city, which provides the perfect backdrop to Julian Fellowes’ story of 19th-century society, against which intrigue and dynastic power struggles play out.

"In addition to our central Edinburgh locations, we have the privilege of using the majestic stately homes of Hopetoun and Manderston, which will become key characters in this fantastic event series."
