Filming for the new Batman film takes place in UK despite tier-three coronavirus restrictions

Filming for the new Batman film, scheduled for release in 2022 has this week been taking place in Liverpool

The Batman production which has transformed Liverpool into Gotham City has caused quite a stir on social media with fans exhilarated at the sight of a man in a full Batman costume in various parts of the city.

The blockbuster production has been spotted filming at a number of iconic city locations with the Liver Building and St George’s Hall a hive of activity.

On one occasion a helicopter was seen circling the Liver Building to film heart stopping scenes of a stunt man peering over the edge of the building.

The black helicopter appeared to be focused on a balcony area above the clock face which faces towards The Strand. A man in full Batman costume secured with a harness could be seen looking out over the city.

Liverpool's skyline is set to double as the towers of Gotham City for this major production, which stars Twilight actor Robert Pattinson as the legendary DC Comics hero.

Other big names in the cast include Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and Colin Farrell starring as The Penguin.

As Liverpool entered Tier Three lockdown, some people have asked why production of the film was allowed to continue when local businesses such as pubs, bars and gyms have had to shut.

Liverpool Council does not comment on individual productions taking place in the city but, when approached by the ECHO, confirmed the restrictions do not limit filming.

A spokeswoman said: “The new restrictions in Liverpool do not currently impact on filming in the city region. The Film Office is working closely with every single production to ensure covid-safe measures are in place and are being adhered to in accordance with rigorous industry protocols.”
