Filming for new BBC drama The Reckoning about Jimmy Savile set to begin in Greater Manchester

A new BBC drama about Jimmy Savile is set to begin filming in Greater Manchester this week.

The Reckoning stars Steve Coogan as the disgraced former TV host and will trace his life from working-class origins to the small screen.

Scenes for the show will be shot in Bolton over the coming weeks, with notes posted to warn businesses in the area of potential disruption.

Le Mans Crescent is set to be used as the backdrop for some of the filming, alongside the former Bolton Magistrates Court building behind the town hall.

The paved area has become a popular setting for TV hits in recent years, featuring in Peaky Blinders and It's a Sin.

The show, which is being produced by ITV Studios for the BBC, will follow Savile through his early years in the dance halls of northern England.

It will take in his career with the BBC and run through to the twilight years when he sought to dispel the growing rumours about his life and the legacy he would leave behind.

The production team say they are working closely with many people whose lives were impacted by Savile to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect.

And, the drama itself will examine the impact his appalling actions had on his victims and the powerlessness many felt when they tried to raise the alarm.

Talking about the show, Mr Coogan said: "To play Jimmy Savile was not a decision I took lightly. Neil McKay has written an intelligent script tackling sensitively an horrific story which - however harrowing - needs to be told."

Executive producer Jeff Pope added: "The purpose of this drama is to explore how Savile’s offending went unchecked for so long, and in shining a light on this, to ensure such crimes never happen again.

"Steve Coogan has a unique ability to inhabit complex characters and will approach this role with the greatest care and integrity."
