Filming for Derry Girls Series 3 will 'hopefully start this year', says actor Dylan Llewellyn

Derry Girls have been off the air for almost a year now - but we're still waiting with anticipation for the return of the hugely successful show.

After it's second series wrapped up last year, Derry Girls was immediately commissioned for another run.

Six more 30-minute episodes are due at some stage in the future.

Commenting on the series renewal at the time, Channel 4's Head of Comedy, Fiona McDermott, said: "It's no surprise that Derry Girls continues to delight a growing legion of fans.

"A combination of magical writing and adorable characters make this show both timely and timeless.

"We're delighted to confirm a third series - don't tell Ma Mary, but I'm breaking open the Christmas cupboard in celebration."

Viewers immediately embraced the good news - but months later, we have yet to hear details about when the show's third season might air on our screens.

However, some of the leading lights of the show were present at the National Television Awards on Thursday night, where Derry Girls was nominated for Best Comedy.

During a brief interview with FM104's Thomas Crosse, Dylan Llewellyn - who plays James on the show - said that the groundwork for the new series is being laid at the moment.

"Series 3 is in the works," he said, speaking on NTA red carpet. "We're doing it hopefully later this year."

The actor was tight-lipped and didn't go into any specifics, but this is the first clear sign that the third series will get to us in the near future.

Whatever date it airs, its clear that demand for Derry Girls is higher than ever.

In a recent interview with Red Carpet News TV, the show's creator, Lisa McGee, suggested that a Derry Girls movie could be in the pipeline "at some point".

She said: "It's definitely something we are talking about and it's something I would like to explore.

"It's just about making sure the story is right so it's about me figuring all of that out at some point."
