Film Weekly on Humpday and Ricky Gervais's The Invention of Lying

This week, Jason Solomons meets director Lynn Shelton, whose mumblecore comedy Humpday kicks off the Raindance festival this week. Humpday centres on two straight male chums and their mutual dare to have sex with each other on film for an art project. Shelton explains that despite the salacious premise, the film is not a Farrelly brothers-style broad farce.

Jason then makes a virtual visit to Rio de Janeiro by talking to Beadie Finzi, the film-maker behind Only When I Dance, a moving documentary about two young people who seek to escape Rio's favelas through ballet. UK audiences will get a chance to see it when it closes the Barbican's Cinema of Brazil festival on 8 October.

Finally, he joins Xan Brooks to review the week's key releases: Ricky Gervais's feature directorial debut The Invention of Lying, the Rufus Sewell and Emmanuelle Béart-starring Vinyan, The Beaches of Agnès – a look into the mind of nouvelle vague doyenne Agnès Varda, and Parisian resistance drama The Army of Crime.
