The cause was congestive heart failure, said her longtime friend Mary Goodstein.

Scott broke out of her film noir stereotype for a few movies, including the 1957 Elvis Presley vehicle "Loving You" and the 1953 Dean Martin/Jerry Lewis comedy "Scared Stiff."

Her sultry looks and husky voice drew comparisons to Lauren Bacall, but as film noir faded, so did Scott's career. Her last movie appearance was in "Pulp," a 1972 send-up of the noir genre.

A complete obituary will follow.
