Film Movement, a prominent North American indie distributor, has exciting news for film enthusiasts. They are teaming up with LA-based studio and distributor Memory to co-release an intriguing film called 'Mother, Couch!' directed by Niclas Larsson. The star-studded cast includes Ewan McGregor, Ellen Burstyn, Rhys Ifans, and Taylor Russell. This unique collaboration is set to hit theaters later this year after its successful journey through various prestigious film festivals.

Based on the book 'Mamma | Soffa' by Jerker Virdborg, 'Mother, Couch!' had its world premiere at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. It then charmed audiences at the 2023 New Directors section of San Sebastian's festival and continued to capture attention throughout the festival circuit. Recently, it received the honor of being awarded Best Nordic Film at the Goteborg Film Festival.

The story of 'Mother, Couch!' revolves around a family trapped in an antiquated furniture store. The matriarch of the family, played by the legendary Ellen Burstyn, refuses to get up from one of the display couches, leaving her three estranged children played by McGregor, Ifans, and Boyle puzzled. Determined to find out why their mother refuses to move, they embark on a mind-bending journey. They receive assistance from the store managers, portrayed by F. Murray Abraham, and their daughter, played by Taylor Russell. As the story unfolds, the siblings must confront life-altering truths about their family.

Michael Rosenberg, the President of Film Movement, describes 'Mother, Couch!' as 'a surreal look at one family's public meltdown.' He praises Niclas Larsson's distinctive approach to the plot and his skillful direction of the all-star cast, particularly highlighting Ellen Burstyn's outstanding performance. This film showcases Larsson as an exciting new talent in the industry.

Meanwhile, Riel Roch-Decter, co-founder of Memory, acknowledges the arrival of a new cinematic talent in Niclas Larsson. Roch-Decter commends Larsson's imaginative exploration of family trauma and the incredible performances of the cast. The film embodies high cinematic standards and promises an exceptional viewing experience.

The deal for 'Mother, Couch!' was negotiated by Michael Rosenberg, representing Film Movement, and the UTA Independent Film Group on behalf of the filmmakers. The production boasts an impressive team, with Ella Bishop and Pau Suris from Suris/Bishop Films, Alex Black from Lyrical Media, and Sara Murphy from Fat City serving as producers. Additionally, Jon Rosenberg and Natalie Sellers, under their Lyrical Media banner, Ryan Zacarias from Fat City, McGregor, and David Harari are credited as executive producers. The film was made in co-production with Film i Vast and Snowglobe.

As the buzz around 'Mother, Couch!' continues to grow, film enthusiasts eagerly await its theatrical release later this year. Its journey from acclaimed film festivals to a wider audience signifies the captivating storytelling and exceptional talent at its core. With its distinctive take on dysfunctional family dynamics and profound exploration of truth, 'Mother, Couch!' promises to leave a lasting impression within the cinematic landscape.
