Film loving residents set up first community cinema in South Belfast

Film loving residents in South Belfast have set up the first community cinema for their area.

The Ormeau Community Cinema (OCC), the first volunteer-led cinema for the area, will officially launch on Cinema Day, Monday, August 26.

OCC will screen the 90's classic family adventure ‘Jumanji’ at the Ormeau Park Bowling Pavilion as well as bringing the magic of the film to life through a number of classic boardgames.

OCC is a group of local residents who organise regular film screenings across a number of venues in the Ormeau area .

Dominic O’Neill, one of the founding members, said: “We’re a group of local residents that want to share our love of film and where we live.

“We formed a few months ago and have been really pleased to see so many people from all walks of life come along to our first two events, showing a real appetite for this type of event.”

To date OCC have screened Finding Nemo in Cooke Centenary Church and The Princess Bride at Holy Rosary Parish Hall.

OCC’s official launch will take place on Cinema Day, kicking off with games at 2pm followed by the screening at 3pm.

Admission for OCC events is donation only, and after event and licensing costs are covered, any profits will go towards future screenings.

Cinema Day is an initiative by Film Hub NI that celebrates cinema and film across Northern Ireland. This year over 26 venues across Northern Ireland are taking part to host over 30 screenings based around this year’s theme of ‘youth.’

Dominic added: “Thinking of this year’s theme, we decided to show ‘Jumanji’, which tells the story of a young boy who gets trapped inside a supernatural boardgame. We’ll have a number of games including giant jenga and connect 4 so you can relieve your youth or teach the next generation the classics.

“Ormeau is a diverse area and we want to create a welcome space for everyone to come together and enjoy a film. We’re also always on the lookout for new volunteers too.”
