Film director Shankar Shanmugham seriously injured as assistants killed in on-set tragedy

Film director Shankar Shanmugham has been seriously injured on the set of his latest film in an accident that has killed two of his assistants.

The director - credited as S. Shankar - was hurt on the set of Indian 2 when a crane fell, according to an Indian film journalist.

It's said that the director, known for films including Gentleman and Nanban, has severely fractured his leg.

A tweet from journalist Prashanth Rangaswamy read: "#Indian2 mishap update : Director @shankarshanmugh sir severely injured , his leg severely fractured.

"Two assistant directors of shankar sir are no more say sources . Awaiting more confirmation. Pic of the crane that fell !!"

Devastating pictures from the scene show the crane crashed to the ground.

It has fallen on top of a blue tent, which is thought to be where the camera monitors are placed, and where the director and his assistant directors would have been standing.

Reports also state that people at the scene were rushed to hospital, and that the remaining members of the cast and crew are safe.

S. Shankar, 56, is an award-winning director.

His career began in the 90s and he went on to become one of the highest paid directors in Indian cinema.

He's the man behind some of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.

Shankar's 2018 blockbuster, 2.0, was the fourth most successful movie Indian cinema.

He was reportedly filming scenes for his new movie, Indian 2, when the tragic accident happened.

The film was scheduled for release in April.
