Film crews turn Liverpool city centre into backdrop for BBC drama

Films crews have used an array of incredible props to turn Liverpool city centre into yet another BBC drama backdrop.

BBC 's Ridley Road is currently being filmed in the city as vans, extras and security were seen surrounding the town hall on Monday.

On Tuesday, crews were then seen on William Brown Street, close to St George's Hall, for more scenes which transported Liverpool back to the 1960s.

Ridley Road is a thriller set against the backdrop London's swinging sixties, with an East End underworld where far right fascism is on the rise.

When Vivien Epstein follows her lover into danger and he is caught between life and death, Vivien finds herself going undercover with the fascists, not only for him but for the sake of her country.

While writing Ridley Road, writer Sarah Solemani undertook extensive research into the period, she says: “Britain’s relationship with fascism is closer and more alive than we like to think.

"Luckily, so is our rich heritage of fighting it. Jo Bloom’s gripping book revealed a darker side to sixties London and the staggering contribution the Jewish community made in the battle against racism.

"I am thrilled to be working with RED and the BBC to bring this little-known slice of British history to the screen.”

And the work that's gone into the staging of the production is seriously impressive.

Vintage cars, police vehicles and double decker buses are among some of the tools producers are using to make the filming more realistic.

Fascist "Britain Awake" signs were also photographed in the city centre by ECHO photographer Andy Teebay, which will no doubt make an appearance in the final cut when the show airs later this year.

In Exchange Flags classic vehicles, including an old fashioned London Bus and a 1960s Vauxhall Cresta can be seen lining the streets giving some indication of what to expect.

An old fashioned ‘Typhoo Tea’ advert banner can also be seen stuck on the side of the retro red bus.

Newspaper clippings from 'The Gazette' were also posted around Exchange Flags.

The BBC TV series, adapted from the critically acclaimed novel by Jo Bloom, was announced by the BBC in 2019.

The cast is set to include Rory Kinnear, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Eddie Marsan, Samantha Spiro and Rita Tushingham.

Filming for Ridley Road is expected to take place all over the UK, with cast and crew remaining in Liverpool until Wednesday, before they move on to Manchester.
