Filip Helander's latest Rangers injury blow saddens Sweden boss Janne Andersson as defender faces months out

Missing key games for club and country is a blow, but Sweden boss Janne Andersson insists he is saddened for Filip Helander as a person after his latest injury setback.

The big Rangers defender picked up a brutal knee injury in the 2-1 win at St Johnstone last weekend and faces being out until Christmas with the problem.

With crucial games coming up in the Premiership and the Europa League - including tonight's visit of Lyon to Ibrox - it's a huge disappointment for Steven Gerrard's Light Blues.

Helander is also a key man for the Swedish national team and is set to sit out their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo, Greece, Georgia and Spain.

It's frustrating for Andersson who admits he feels for the 28-year-old.

He said: "It's really disappointing for us, but above all, it's really sad for Filip.

"My hope is that his rehabilitation goes well and he's back in action as soon as possible."

Helander hasn't had his injury issues to seek and revealed in a June interview the struggle he's endured throughout his career.

The Gers centre-half said: "It is the worst thing as a football player, to be injured. You go to training every day where it feels like you are not getting anywhere.

"You miss match after match. It's the worst situation as a football player, to be injured. I have had a lot of injuries.

"Mostly minor injuries that have taken four to six weeks. It is clearly something you want to get rid of. But all bodies are different. You have to accept it.

"Very often I have had to push myself to play through injuries and I have basically taken tablets before most matches since I was 20."
