Filip Helander in Rangers injury mystery as Sweden manager offers 'wait and see' defender update

Sweden boss Janne Andersson has revealed Rangers defender Filip Helander has been training separately from the squad due to a mystery injury.

The centre-back played a crucial role in Sweden's historic World Cup qualifier win over Spain to end the former Luis Enrique’s men 66-game undefeated qualifying streak.

The in-form defender minimised the dangers of Alvaro Morata, Ferran Torres and Gerard Moreno, but was a surprise absentee for the friendly win over Uzbekistan on Sunday.

The Rangers man didn't even make the bench for the warm-up for the crucial qualifier against Greece on Wednesday, with a win all-but guaranteeing a playoff spot as a minimum.

Following the game, Andersson admitted he could be missing the stand-out defender for the tie.

He told the Swedish press that he had been training away from his teammates and was left out of the friendly as a precaution.

Andersson said: "Filip Helander (has) run individually in the gym. Some players have been given an adapted training load and will step up gradually."

When asked if he was expected to be fit for Wednesday, he added: "It's too early to say. We can't take it for granted."

The towering Swede earned his 17th cap for his country against Spain as he partnered Manchester United’s Victor Lindelöf in the heart of defence.

The victory capped off a brilliant week for Helander and the Premiership champions, after he netted the winner over Celtic on derby day.
