Filip Helander in Covid blow for Rangers as Swedish defender tests positive

Rangers will be without Filip Helander for the next 10 days at least after the Swedish defender tested positive for Covid-19.

The big centre back has been a sub in recent weeks but was expected to start against Falkirk in the Betfred Cup on Sunday.

But he was left out and Rangers have now confirmed he returned a positive Covid-19 test and will now be in self-isolation over the next 10 days.

A club statement said: "Rangers can confirm that Filip Helander has returned a positive test for Covid-19.

"He will self isolate in line with government guidelines. We wish Filip well and look forward to his return to our squad."

Helander is the first Rangers player to test positive for the virus, although right back Nathan Patterson was put into a two week isolation after being deemed a close contact of Scotland U21 players who tested positive.

The big defender joined Rangers last summer but missed a large chunk of last season with a foot injury that kept him out from December 2019 until this season.

He's impressed at the heart of the defence but has been a sub for Steven Gerrard's men since a poor performance in the 3-3 draw with Benfica.
