Filip Helander heads for Rangers medical with Bologna defender's transfer close

Filip Helander is heading for a Rangers medical as he closes in on a big-money move to Ibrox.

The defender looks set to become Steven Gerrard 's eighth summer signing in the next 48 hours.

Rangers and Bologna were locked in talks over a fee for the Sweden international with the Ibrox club confident of landing the player for £3.5m. Reports in Italy had claimed, after add-ons, that fee would be €6million (£5.3m).

If everything goes smoothly with the medical, the 26-year-old is expected to conclude a deal in time for Rangers' friendly against Marseille on Sunday at Ibrox.

Bologna sporting director Riccardo Bigon last night confirmed to Record Sport that talks had reached an advanced stage.

He said: "We hope to have an agreement very soon.”

Helander broke through at Malmo and was a key man in the Sweden side that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2015.

He moved to Hellas Verona that summer and has spent the last three seasons with Bologna. However the 26-year-old fell out of favour under Sinisa Mihajlovic following Filippo Inzaghi's sacking in January and started just three matches under the Serb.

All going well with the move to Ibrox, Helander will become the most expensive Ibrox signing since Nikica Jelavic nine years ago.

He will compete with Connor Goldson, Nikola Katic and new signing George Edmundson for a place in the centre of defence.
