Filip Helander completes Rangers move as defender becomes Ibrox club's most expensive signing in nine years

Rangers have signed Filip Helander on a four-year deal as Steven Gerrard bolsters his backline for the new season.

The 6ft 4in Sweden international joins from Bologna for £3.5million.

Record Sport revealed on Thursday the two clubs were locked in talks over a move for the 26-year-old who had fallen out of favour with boss Siniša Mihajlović towards the end of the Serie A season.

Helander still had three years to run on his deal in Italy though and Rangers have had to fork out their first seven-figure sum of the summer to land the stopper.

Gerrard now has four central defenders at his disposal with fellow summer signing George Edmundson vying for a starting position with Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson.

Helander said: “I am delighted to be joining Rangers, it’s a special club with tremendous fans and a unique history.

“The opportunity to work with a manager like Steven Gerrard was an easy decision to make.

"I’ve come here to battle for every point and to win trophies and I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and getting started."

Helander has spent the past three seasons with Bologna after being snapped up from Hellas Verona.

He came through the ranks at his local side Malmo and was part of the victorious Sweden U21 side that won the European Championship in 2015.

Since then he has become an established member of Janne Andersson's Sweden side and started all four of their Euro qualifiers this year.
