Filip Helander added to Rangers Europa League squad as Jake Hastie is axed for Progres clash

Filip Helander could make his competitive Rangers debut after being added to the club’s Europa League squad.

The Swedish international has replaced Jake Hastie ahead of Thursday’s first leg against Progres Niederkorn at Ibrox.

Former Motherwell winger Hastie played against St Joseph's last week but struggled to make an impact from the left wing position and was replaced early in the second half.

The removal of Hastie means Rangers have just three recognised first team wingers in the squad in the shape of Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Jones and Greg Stewart.

They do also have Scott Arfield who has played in an inside left position as well as youngsters Dapo Mebude and Josh McPake who have played their part in pre-season, with the latter also appearing against St Joseph’s.

Helander made his first appearance for Rangers in Sunday's friendly against Blackburn and was on the pitch a matter of minutes when the Ibrox side concended.

The former Bologna centre back wasn't at fault for the goal and Gerrard was happy with his showing despite his lack of fitness.

He said: “I was pleased with Filip as he came on at a difficult time with a lot of changes. The rhythm of the game and our organisation went a little bit when he came on but I still think he did okay.”

Rangers can make another change to the squad up to 24 hours before Thursday night's game if they decide another is needed.

They were forced into a change for this round if they wanted to add Helander because the club can only register 22 players.

That's down to Allan McGregor being the only homegrown player at Ibrox, meaning three spaces need left.

FULL SQUAD

Goalkeepers: Allan McGregor, Wes Foderingham, Andy Firth

Midfielders: Joe Aribo, Scott Arfield, Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Ryan Jack, Greg Docherty

Forwards: Sheyi Ojo, Greg Stewart, Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe, Jordan Jones
