Filip Benkovic to Celtic earns Brendan Rodgers' transfer blessing as Leicester boss beams 'it's a great move'

Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has dropped the biggest hint yet that cursed Leicester City defender Filip Benkovic could be heading back to Parkhead.

The 23-year-old Croat arrived to much fanfare when the Irishman brought him on a season-long loan to Glasgow in 2018 but a series of injury setbacks ultimately soured his time north of the border.

In a twist of fate Rodgers would join the Foxes but Benkovic 's rotten luck has put paid to any opportunities with the Premier League high-flyers.

And the imposing stopper is on the lookout for his next move after a nightmare loan with Cardiff and Celtic are also in a need for a defender following Chris Jullien 's knee injury nightmare.

And Rodgers sees no reason why a reunion can't happen during the January transfer window if it suits both parties.

He said: “It's certainly a possibility. It's a huge club and he did very well there. We haven't had any contact but he's back now and we will see what happens.

“Celtic would be a great move for him. He's at the age where he really needs to be playing and that didn't quite materialise at Cardiff.

“I would never blame another manager for not playing someone because circumstances can change all the time but unfortunately it didn't work out.

“It's quite simple really, it's now a case of finding somewhere where he can go next and get some game time.”

Benkovic has three-and-a-half years remaining on his current deal at the King Power Stadium.
