Filip Benkovic given Celtic transfer go-ahead as Brendan Rodgers backs January reunion

Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has told Filip Benkovic that a return to Glasgow would be a great move for his career.

The defender impressed during a loan spell in the 2018/19 season but hasn't kicked on with Leicester like many expected him since then.

He spent the first half of this campaign on loan at Cardiff in the Championship before being recalled when the January window opened earlier this week.

Almost immediately there were suggestions that he might return to Celtic Park and Rodgers says that it would be a great opportunity if it arose.

But Rodgers has revealed there's been no contact from Neil Lennon's men so far.

He said: “It's certainly a possibility. It's a huge club and he did very well there. We haven't had any contact but he's back now and we will see what happens.

“Celtic would be a great move for him. He's at the age where he really needs to be playing and that didn't quite materialise at Cardiff.

“I would never blame another manager for not playing someone because circumstances can change all the time but unfortunately it didn't work out.

“It's quite simple really, it's now a case of finding somewhere where he can go next and get some game time.”
